Scholarship Program (Inaugurated in 2012)

Objectives and Overview

  • Supporting University of Colombo undergraduates with financial hardship.
  • Criteria – study progress of students and financial status of their families.
  • All Faculties included.
  • Working with University lecturers to identify students.
  • Interview with academic staff to assess eligibility.
  • Study grant made to students
  • Many eligible students but limited CUAAV funds.
  • Scholarship program formed to fund project.

CUAAV thanks the academic staff who assisted in the selection of the students and facilitated the handover of funds.

Faculty of Medicine Community Attachment Program

Objectives and Overview

In March 2014, we also made a contribution of Rs 30,000 to the Community Medicine Stream of the Colombo University Faculty of Medicine for developing teaching materials for the Community Attachment Program (CAP).

The newly introduced eight day residential component of the program was conducted in April 2014 in the rural setting of the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) area of Embilipitiya in the Ratnapura District.

A total of 224 undergraduates of Advanced Level 2011 batch participated in the CAP. Fifteen student groups were formed with approximately 15 students in each group.  Each group was attached to a tutor throughout the programme.  Eleven academic and academic support staff members, 6 postgraduate Registrars Community Medicine attached to the Dept. of Community Medicine 2 Medical officers serving in the Embilipitiya area functioned as tutors of the programme on a roster basis.

The residential facility of National Centre for Leadership Development at Embilipitiya was used for accommodation purposes.

Scholarship Awards - 2012

12 Students from several Departments in the Faculties of Arts and Science received grants of Rs 15,000 each.

Several CUAAV representatives visited the University of Colombo recently and one of our founder members made the awards to the Arts Faculty students on 21 December 2012.

Scholarship Awards - 2013/ 2014

In 2013/2014, awards of Rs 20,000 were made to 15 students from the Faculties of Medicine and Science.

Book Donation to Libraries - December 2010

The Colombo University Alumni Association of Victoria donated several text books to the University of Colombo library.

They were presented by Dr. Gandara Amarasinghe , Dr. Ruwan Epa and Mrs. Shyamalee De Costa to the Vice Chancellor of University of Colombo, Prof. Kshanika Hirimburegama at the office of the Vice Chancellor. The Heads of Chemistry, Zoology & Botany departments were also present at the donation.
